Correspondence from Karl Germer to Philip Kaplan
2432 Laurel Pass Hollywood 46, Cal.
Aug. 20, 1957.
Dear Philip Kaplan:
Expecting you to be home after a nice vacation, it is time to write you, to thank you for your postcard the secluded spot in Maine (just the type of place I'd enjoy!) and to answer your last letter. I will not wait for a letter from you which you said you would send after your return. I follow the passages of yours of July 21.
"Collection is safe"—I meant from theft, and partly, of course from such calamities as fire, and, as far as possible "Acts of God"—if He is with you.
"Evan' [Montgomery Evans] library"—I am really curious to know the Library that has it now, and what it contains. If you hear, don't fail to let me know.—Incidentally: I never was a friend of Evans; I could not get along with him. In his last phase he contacted me in N.Y., I found him drunk to the brim in a Hotel room, small, shabby, with bleary eyes. He asked me for $10 and I gave it to him, never to see him again, until I heard of the tragedy of his wife.
"Little Essays Toward Truth"—is First Edition. I'll send you a copy on the first occasion.
Do you have any things we published here: Vision and the Voice and The Gospel According to Saint B.S. [The Gospel According to St. Bernard Shaw] both in red artificial leather binding. This last one has many important quotation from "The World's Tragedy", the deep meaning of which is rarely grasped by the readers.
Now with regard to the World's Tragedy. Yes, I actually have the holograph in A.C.'s hand with his corrections; it lacks the "Preface" xxxvii pages. I have thought a lot about it, and do not think I have a right to part with it.
However, I also have a complete Typescript of it, and while it also lacks the "Preface", I could get this types and add it. If you would be willing to give me Bagh-i-Muattar in exchange for
(a) this Typescript, complete (b) Little Essays Toward Truth (c) Orpheus in 2 volumes, excellent copy (d) a Typescript of Bagh-i-Muattar
I am ready for it. Please think it over! ! I will even add one or two items of which I may find a spare (or get them for you) of the Swiss publications in the German language of A.C. work.
Now I would like to give you the list of some items which I do not have (I go by Symonds [John Symonds]—Yorke's [Gerald Yorke] bibliography)
1. Aceldama 2. Jezebel 10. Tannhäuser 11. The God-Eater 12. Summa Spes 28. Amphora 30. Alexandra 32. Rosa Decidua also: 37, 39, 46, 45. as well as 75. 76. 77. 83. 88. 89. 103. The Whirlpool
Should you by any chance hear of any of these coming on the market I'd appreciate your telling me.—
Going back to your own list, you surely must have Item 63. B. No. 1 (called the Blue Equinox [Equinox Vol. III, No. 1]) ?? and also No. 3. The Equinox of the Gods?? If not, I can supply the latter, unbound.
With best wishes,
Sincerely
Karl Germer
