Correspondence from Philip Kaplan to Karl Germer
Aug—3—58
Dear Karl—
Glad to hear from you—I was quite concerned when I did not receive an early reply to my letter—but I can see that you have been very busy.
And so have I. In the past 4 months I have devoted all of my non-working hours to Crowley. As you may know I have a great many outside interests that require attention. So, as much as I enjoyed my Crowley experience, I must call a halt at this point, and put aside this intense concentration to continue with my other interests that I have neglected for a long time—until some later date when I feel more relaxed and can go at it again.
However I am happy to answer the questions in your letter. My talks with Yorke [Gerald Yorke] were composed of two sessions lasting in all about six hours. Yorke was very kind to me. He gave me some duplicates and some typescripts. I gave him a copy of Alexandra for which he was most grateful. We agreed to exchange information—and when I gathered mine I had planned to send you copies of everything.
As for detailed information re my collection—Yes, I have gathered some pieces of information here and there—but in the main, nothing startlingly new—but what I have is yours when I get to sending it out. No—I did not visit Zurich—I never planned it in my itinerary.
Now that you have listed the books you desire from my own duplicates, I have decided to send you the following books as a gift—Jezebel, Ahab, Ambergris and Sword of Song.
However, because the collection cost me a great deal more than what I should have paid for it—I feel that I must sell some of the books to get some of my money back, therefore I will be happy to put aside for you the following—
Bagh-i-Muattar—(My copy—that I bought in London. It's all there—but a bit shaky.) Wrappers. Gargoyles—1 of 50 copies, parchment wrappers. God-Eater. Camel Hair Wrappers. Amphora. Ltd Ed. Yorke #28. White Stains. 1 of 88 copies. Bound in full leather.
My price for this lot of six books is $140—this price is for you only—which I think is very fair.
"World's Tragedy"—and lot 25 [MSS. of Sire De Maletroit's Door / Snowdrops from a Curate's Garden / Time] of Lund [Robert Lund] collection—are not for sale.
Lund still has the following books—but refuses to sell them to me—they are—
3 vols. Collected Works—Vellum Ed. "John St. John" original Mss. "Book of Lies" original Mss. "Lines to a Young Lady Violinist"—and "Energized Enthusiasm" original Mss. "Sword of Song" original Mss.
I hope that I have answered all your questions and if you will be patient I shall try and send you more information about the collection sometime in the near future.
Sincerely—
Philip
