- Following the death of the proprietor of the White Rock School in Hastings, Crowley is transferred to a school for sons of the Plymouth Brethren, located at 51 Bateman Street, Cambridge. Extracurricular activities at the school were rigorously religious. Although the boys played cricket, scoring was forbidden lest they commit the sin of emulation. Prayers, ceremonies, meetings, Bible readings, and sermons filled each Sunday, with only two hours allocated for other activities, such as reading books sanctioned for Sundays. Contrary to what one might believe, Crowley seemed happy at the schools and excelled in academics, and received the Selbourne prize for being at the top of his class in “religious knowledge, classics and French.”  [56]
