- Crowley is cremated
in the cold, dark afternoon inside the crematorium chapel of
Brighton Cemetery. At 2:35 the coffin, strewn with flowers,
is borne into the chapel and placed on the bier. After
Louis Wilkinson
gives the opening declaration "Do what thou wilt shall be
the whole of the Law" he proceeds, per Crowley's request,
to read extracts from
The Book of the Law, the “Collects” and “Anthem” from
the
Gnostic Mass, the “Quia Patris” from “The Ship”, and
the “Hymn to Pan”
and finishes with "Love is the law, love under will".
- After
he takes his seat Patricia MacAlpine moves forward and
throws a spray of red roses on the coffin as it makes its
way to incineration.
[54] [The
story about Patricia MacAlpine placing flowers on Crowley's
coffin is contradicted by many newspaper articles of the
time. One example is provided in the
6
December 1947 edition of the Leicester Mercury
newspaper. "Amongst them was Mrs. Hilda Johnson, of
Leicester, a pretty young woman, exquisitely dressed in a
magnificent fur, who dashed forward to place a bunch of pink
carnations on the coffin as it was moving through the tiny
gates to the furnace at the crematorium."]
- Mourners present at the
service include Louis Wilkinson,
Johnnie Symonds,
Sylvia Thorn-Drury,
Gerald Yorke,
Frieda Harris,
John Symonds,
James Gilbert Bayley,
Patricia MacAlpine and
Aleister Ataturk,
Kenneth Grant,
Steffi Grant and Kenneth Hopkins (a friend of Louis
Wilkinson).
